Is Golden Grove's Tap Water Hard? What the Latest SA Water Report Means

Grove Plumbing & Gas • September 22, 2026

White spots on the shower screen, crusty build-up on the kettle element, a showerhead that doesn't spray the way it used to. Golden Grove homeowners often ask us whether hard water is to blame, and whether it's damaging their hot water system.

SA Water publishes regular test results for each water supply system, and the latest figures for the system supplying north-eastern Adelaide answer that question clearly. Golden Grove's water is not hard . Here's what the numbers say and what they mean for your home.

1. Where Golden Grove's water comes from

Golden Grove is supplied through SA Water's Anstey Hill water supply system, which serves north-eastern Adelaide. The water comes from the River Murray and reservoirs in the Mount Lofty Ranges. It's filtered and treated with chlorine, and fluoride is added for public health before it reaches your tap.

The figures below are 12-month averages from SA Water's routine sampling, covering the 12 months to 31 July 2026.

2. The key numbers

  • Hardness: 93 mg/L. The national aesthetic guideline is 200 mg/L or less.
  • Total dissolved solids: 279 mg/L. The guideline is 600 mg/L or less.
  • pH: 7.3. The guideline range is 6.5 to 8.5.
  • Chloride: 75 mg/L. The guideline is 250 mg/L or less.
  • Free chlorine: 0.2 mg/L. The health guideline is 5 mg/L or less and the aesthetic guideline 0.6 mg/L or less.
  • Copper: 0.0024 mg/L and lead: 0.0003 mg/L. Both are very low, with 100% health compliance.

SA Water rates hardness between 60 and 200 mg/L as good quality water . Below 60 mg/L water is soft but can be corrosive, and from 200 mg/L scaling problems start to increase. At 93 mg/L, Golden Grove sits comfortably in the good range.

3. What it means for your hot water system

Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits, or scale, inside hot water tanks, on heating elements and in heat exchangers. It gets worse at higher temperatures. With hardness at 93 mg/L, scale builds slowly in Golden Grove, so it's rarely the main reason a hot water system fails here.

That doesn't mean your system needs no care. Storage tanks still collect some sediment over time, and most contain a sacrificial anode that protects the tank from corrosion and wears away over the years. Having your system serviced and the anode checked helps it last longer. If you're noticing warning signs, read our guide to the 5 signs your hot water system is about to fail.

4. So what are those white spots?

Even good-quality water contains dissolved minerals. Golden Grove's total dissolved solids average 279 mg/L. When water dries on glass, tiles and tapware, those minerals are left behind as spots and film. It's a cleaning issue rather than a plumbing one. A squeegee on the shower screen and an occasional vinegar soak for showerheads and aerators keep it under control.

If a showerhead or tap has lost pressure, a blocked aerator or showerhead is a common and easy fix. If pressure is low across the whole house, it's worth getting a plumber to check. Have you noticed pressure dropping at one tap or everywhere?

5. Do you need a water filter?

For safety, no. SA Water treats the water to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and the Anstey Hill system's results for health-related chemicals such as lead, copper, arsenic and nitrate show 100% compliance.

Some people still prefer a filter for taste, particularly to reduce chlorine flavour. That's a personal choice. If you'd like an under-sink filter or a filtered tap installed, a licensed plumber can plumb it in properly.

Keep in mind that SA Water's results come from sampling points across the network. They don't show what's happening inside your home's own pipes. If your water tastes metallic, looks discoloured or smells unusual, it's worth getting your plumbing checked.

Good water, well looked after

Golden Grove's tap water averages 93 mg/L hardness, well inside SA Water's good-quality range and well under the level where scaling becomes a real problem. That's good news for your hot water system and appliances. Regular servicing will still help them last.
