Why Golden Grove Uses the Most Water in Tea Tree Gully (and 5 Ways to Cut Your Bill)

Golden Grove homes use 253 kL of water a year, the most in Tea Tree Gully. Our local plumbers share 5 practical ways to cut water use and your SA Water bill.

Here's a number that surprises most locals. In 2024–25, the average Golden Grove household used 253 kL of water , the highest of any suburb in the City of Tea Tree Gully. The council-wide average was 209 kL.

Some of that comes down to how Golden Grove is built. Around 85% of homes here are separate houses, most with three or four bedrooms and a garden to water. But bigger homes aren't the whole story. In our experience, a fair share of high water use comes from things you can't see: slow leaks, worn toilet valves, old fixtures and irrigation that runs longer than it needs to.

With SA Water's 2026–27 prices now in effect, it's a good time to look at where your water is going. Below we explain how your bill is worked out, then share five practical ways to bring your usage down.

SA Water charges residential customers a fixed supply charge of

(billed at $88 a quarter), plus a price for every kilolitre you use. That usage price rises in three tiers, based on your average daily use across the billing period:

           Tier 1:

$2.520 per kL, for use up to 383.6 litres a day

           Tier 2:

$3.597 per kL, for use between 383.6 and 1,424.7 litres a day

           Tier 3:

$3.898 per kL, for use above 1,424.7 litres a day

A household using 253 kL a year averages close to 700 litres a day, which puts a good chunk of its water into Tier 2. That's the water that costs you most. As a rough guide, bringing a 253 kL household down to the council average of 209 kL would save around 44 kL, worth about $158 a year at the Tier 2 price.

          1. Check for hidden leaks with a simple meter test

doesn't have to be dramatic to be expensive. A dripping pipe under a slab, a weeping irrigation fitting or a cracked joint in the garden can run for months before anyone notices. Golden Grove's reactive clay soils make this more likely. SA Water describes clay soil movement as the key stress on underground water pipes in South Australia: the ground shrinks in hot, dry summers and swells with winter rain.

You can check for a leak yourself. Turn off every tap and water-using appliance in the house, including irrigation. Then read your water meter, wait an hour or two without using any water, and read it again. If the numbers have moved, water is escaping somewhere.

          2. Fix running toilets and dripping taps

A toilet that keeps trickling into the pan after a flush is one of the most common water wasters we see. Most of the time it's a worn inlet or outlet valve, which is a quick and affordable fix. To test yours, put a few drops of food colouring in the cistern and wait 15 minutes without flushing. If colour shows up in the bowl, the cistern is leaking.

Dripping taps and leaking shower mixers

are worth fixing too. Each one is small on its own, but they add up across a household over a year.

          3. Upgrade to water-efficient fixtures

If your home still has its original showerheads, tapware or toilets, upgrading can make a real difference. Look for products with a higher star rating on the WELS (Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards) label. A modern efficient showerhead can still give a good shower while using noticeably less water than an older model.

Showers are one of the biggest daily water uses in most homes, so if you only change one thing, start there.

          4. Put a rainwater tank to work

Many Golden Grove homes already have a rainwater tank, but not all of them are plumbed into the house. In South Australia, new homes must have a tank of at least 1 kL plumbed to a toilet, a water heater or all the cold water outlets in the laundry. Older homes can often be retrofitted the same way.

Connecting your tank to toilets and the laundry means rainwater does jobs you'd otherwise pay SA Water for. The work needs a licensed plumber, and a certificate of compliance must be completed once it's installed.

          5. Get your irrigation under control

Parafield, the nearest Bureau of Meteorology station, averages just 444.5 mm of rain a year, so gardens here get thirsty. Irrigation is often where the biggest savings are. Check your controller hasn't drifted back to summer settings in winter, water early in the morning, and walk the system while it runs to spot broken sprinklers or split drip lines.

Have you checked your garden taps and irrigation fittings lately? Split fittings hidden under mulch are a common source of waste we come across on local jobs.

Using the most water in Tea Tree Gully doesn't have to mean paying the most. A quick meter test, a few repairs and some smart upgrades can bring your usage and your bill down. If you'd like a hand finding a leak, fixing a running toilet or connecting your rainwater tank,

Adelaide's dry spell has had an effect underground that most people never see. In 2024–25, SA Water recorded

SA Water puts the rise down to sustained dry conditions, which send thirsty roots looking for moisture inside sewer pipes. It also reports higher blockage rates in foothills and naturally vegetated areas, which describes much of Adelaide's north-east, including Golden Grove.

pipes carry water and nutrients, and they're usually warmer and damper than the soil around them. In a dry year, tree roots follow that moisture. Even a hairline crack or a slightly loose joint lets water vapour escape, and fine roots find their way in.

Once inside, roots grow fast. They form a dense mat that catches toilet paper, grease and wipes, and the blockage builds from there. Over time, the roots can widen cracks, shift joints and even break pipes apart.

Golden Grove's reactive clay soil adds to the problem. SA Water explains that clay shrinks and cracks in hot, dry months, then swells with winter rain. That seasonal movement can open up joints in older drainage lines, giving roots an easy way in.

Root blockages rarely happen overnight. Most give you plenty of warning if you know what to look for:

If you notice two or more of these at once, especially if you have large trees near your drainage line, it's worth getting your drains checked before the problem gets worse.

This is one of the most common questions we get. SA Water looks after the sewer mains. Generally, the drainage pipes on your property, up to the point where they connect to SA Water's network, are the property owner's responsibility.

You can't stop roots looking for water, but you can make your drains harder targets:

Find out where your sewer and stormwater lines run before planting new trees, and keep thirsty species well away from them.

Book a camera inspection if you've bought an older home or have mature trees near your drains.

Don't ignore early signs. A slow drain is much cheaper to fix than a sewage overflow.

Keep wipes, fats and oils out of your drains, because they give roots something to catch on.

When did you last have your drains checked? If you've never had a camera through them, now is a good time, before summer dries the soil out again.

Tree roots are now the leading cause of sewer blockages in South Australia, and dry conditions are making them hungrier. Golden Grove's mature trees and shifting clay soils put local drains at extra risk, but early action makes all the difference.

Is Your Hot Water System Due? SA's Low-Emission Rules Explained

Replacing a hot water system in Golden Grove? SA rules generally require a low-emission unit. Here's what's allowed, what's exempt and how to plan ahead.

Golden Grove didn't grow one house at a time. The suburb was set up under a 1984 agreement between the State of South Australia, Delfin and the South Australian Urban Land Trust, with a projected 15-year build across about 1,230 hectares. Because so many homes went up in the same era, many of their original fixtures are ageing together, and the hot water system is usually the first to go.

If yours is showing its age, there's something important to know before it fails. In South Australia, a new or replacement water heater in a house generally has to be a low-emission type. You can't

          1. What SA's water heater rules require

Under South Australia's residential water heater requirements, when you install a new water heater or replace an existing one in a house, it generally has to be a low-emission type. According to SA Government guidance, that includes:

The rules are there to cut running costs and emissions, and in practice they rule out many of the older-style electric storage units that were common when Golden Grove was built.

Not every hot water job triggers the rules. According to the Office of the Technical Regulator, the requirements don't apply to:

get replaced in a rush, on the day they stop working. That's when your choices are narrowest. You're more likely to take whatever's in stock rather than the system that suits your household and budget.

Planning ahead gives you time to compare solar, heat pump and gas options, weigh running costs, and book the work at a time that suits you. It's especially worth doing if your system is original to the house. Check the compliance plate on the unit for its manufacture date. If it's more than a decade old, it's worth having it inspected.

          4. The safety rules that come with every install

Every hot water installation in South Australia also has to meet temperature and paperwork rules:

           Storage temperature:

storage water heaters must hold water at a minimum of 60°C, which helps control bacteria such as Legionella.

           Delivery temperature:

heated water to bathroom outlets must be delivered at no more than 50°C to reduce the risk of scalding (45°C in aged care, health care and children's facilities).

           Solar systems:

all new and replacement solar hot water installations need a temperature control device.

           Certificate of compliance:

installing or replacing a water heater needs a plumbing certificate of compliance, given to you and the Office of the Technical Regulator within seven days.

If a quote doesn't mention a tempering valve or a certificate of compliance, ask why.

           Heat pumps

work like a reverse air conditioner, drawing heat from the air. They're a popular choice for homes without good roof space for solar.

           Solar

           5-star gas continuous flow

in Golden Grove, you'll quickly face a choice between solar and heat pump. Both are low-emission options, which matters because South Australia's rules generally require a new or replacement water heater in a house to be low emission.

Both work well in Adelaide, but they suit different homes. The right choice depends on your roof, your household and how you use hot water. Below we explain how each system works, how Adelaide's north-east climate affects them, and where 5-star gas continuous flow fits in.

Plenty of sun suits solar. Cool winter mornings are when heat pumps work hardest. Both systems cope well here, but the climate explains why the details matter.

          2. How solar hot water works

Solar hot water systems use collectors on your roof to heat water, which is stored in a tank. On cloudy days or when demand is high, an electric or gas booster tops up the heat.

Solar tends to suit homes that have:

A roof that can take the weight of the collectors (and sometimes a roof-mounted tank)

          Steady daytime hot water use

One safety point: all new and replacement solar hot water installations in South Australia need a temperature control device. Solar can heat water well above safe delivery temperatures on hot days, and heated water to bathrooms must be delivered at no more than 50°C.

          3. How heat pump hot water works

A heat pump works like an air conditioner in reverse. It draws heat from the surrounding air and transfers it to the water in the tank. It runs on electricity, but it uses far less than a traditional electric element because it moves heat rather than making it.

Heat pumps tend to suit homes that have:

A roof that isn't ideal for solar, because of shading, orientation or limited space

Room for the unit outside, away from bedroom windows, since the fan and compressor make some noise

Rooftop solar panels, so the heat pump can run on a timer during the day

Heat pumps are most efficient in warm air, so they work hardest on cold winter mornings. Running them during the warmer part of the day, especially on your own solar power, helps performance and running costs.

          4. The third option: 5-star gas continuous flow

If your home is connected to mains gas, a high-efficiency continuous-flow gas system is also a compliant choice, as long as it has a minimum 5-star energy rating. It heats water only when you turn on a tap, so there's no storage tank and you won't run out of hot water.

Solar and heat pumps both do well in Adelaide's north-east, and 5-star gas is a strong option for homes on mains gas. The best choice comes down to your roof, your energy setup and your household's habits. Whichever you choose, the installation must meet South Australia's temperature rules and come with a plumbing certificate of compliance.

Golden Grove's tap water averages 93 mg/L hardness, per SA Water's latest report. Here's what that means for your hot water system, kettle and tapware.

. Below 60 mg/L water is soft but can be corrosive, and from 200 mg/L scaling problems start to increase. At 93 mg/L, Golden Grove sits comfortably in the good range.

Hard water leaves calcium and magnesium deposits, or scale, inside hot water tanks, on heating elements and in heat exchangers. It gets worse at higher temperatures. With hardness at 93 mg/L, scale builds slowly in Golden Grove, so it's rarely the main reason a hot water system fails here.

That doesn't mean your system needs no care. Storage tanks still collect some sediment over time, and most contain a sacrificial anode that protects the tank from corrosion and wears away over the years. Having your system serviced and the anode checked helps it last longer. If you're noticing warning signs, read our guide to the

          4. So what are those white spots?

Even good-quality water contains dissolved minerals. Golden Grove's total dissolved solids average 279 mg/L. When water dries on glass, tiles and tapware, those minerals are left behind as spots and film. It's a cleaning issue rather than a plumbing one. A squeegee on the shower screen and an occasional vinegar soak for showerheads and aerators keep it under control.

If a showerhead or tap has lost pressure, a blocked aerator or showerhead is a common and easy fix. If pressure is low across the whole house, it's worth getting a plumber to check. Have you noticed pressure dropping at one tap or everywhere?

          5. Do you need a water filter?

For safety, no. SA Water treats the water to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines, and the Anstey Hill system's results for health-related chemicals such as lead, copper, arsenic and nitrate show 100% compliance.

Some people still prefer a filter for taste, particularly to reduce chlorine flavour. That's a personal choice. If you'd like an under-sink filter or a filtered tap installed, a licensed plumber can plumb it in properly.

Keep in mind that SA Water's results come from sampling points across the network. They don't show what's happening inside your home's own pipes. If your water tastes metallic, looks discoloured or smells unusual, it's worth getting your plumbing checked.

Golden Grove's tap water averages 93 mg/L hardness, well inside SA Water's good-quality range and well under the level where scaling becomes a real problem. That's good news for your hot water system and appliances. Regular servicing will still help them last.

and surrounding areas, I've seen countless homeowners caught off guard by a failing hot water unit. The good news? Most systems give you clear warning signs before they completely give up.

In this post, I'll share the 5 most common signs your hot water system is on its last legs—and what you can do about it.

          1. Inconsistent Water Temperature

           The Sign:

Your water fluctuates between scalding hot and freezing cold while you're showering.

           What It Means:

This often indicates a failing thermostat or a broken heating element. For gas systems, it could be a faulty gas valve or burner assembly.

           What To Do:

Don't ignore this! Inconsistent temperatures waste water and energy. Call a licensed plumber to diagnose the issue before it escalates.

          2. Strange Noises Coming from the Tank

           The Sign:

You hear rumbling, popping, or banging sounds coming from your hot water unit.

           What It Means:

These sounds are usually caused by sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. Over time, minerals from your water settle and harden, creating a barrier between the burner and the water. This makes your system work harder—and eventually fail.

           What To Do:

A professional flush can remove sediment and extend your system's life. However, if the tank is already damaged, replacement may be the better option.

          3. Rusty or Discolored Water

           The Sign:

When you turn on your hot tap, the water comes out brown, yellow, or reddish.

           What It Means:

This is a serious sign of internal rust inside your tank. Once rust starts, it's only a matter of time before a leak develops.

           What To Do:

If you notice rusty water from your hot taps but not your cold taps, your tank is likely corroding. This typically requires a full replacement. A Master Plumber can assess the situation and recommend the best course of action.

          4. Leaks Around the Base of the Unit

           The Sign:

You notice water pooling around the base of your hot water system.

           What It Means:

A leaking tank means the internal lining has failed. There's no effective repair for this—once a tank leaks, replacement is the only solution.

           What To Do:

Turn off the power and water supply to the unit immediately. Then call an emergency plumber. A leaking tank can cause significant water damage to your home if left unchecked.

          5. Your System Is Over 10–12 Years Old

           The Sign:

Your unit is approaching or has passed its expected lifespan.

           What It Means:

Most hot water systems last between 8 and 12 years with proper maintenance. If yours is in this age range, even without obvious symptoms, it's worth considering a proactive replacement.

           What To Do:

Schedule an inspection with a local plumber. Replacing an aging unit before it fails saves you the inconvenience of an emergency call-out and gives you the opportunity to upgrade to a more energy-efficient model.

If your hot water system stops working completely:

Check the circuit breaker (for electric systems) or gas supply (for gas systems)

Turn off the water supply to prevent flooding

, I've cleared hundreds of blockages over the past 10 years. The good news is that many of these blockages are preventable with a little awareness and regular maintenance.

Let's dive into the 7 most common culprits behind blocked drains—and how you can keep your pipes clear.

          1. Hair (The #1 Culprit in Bathrooms)

           Why It Causes Blockages:

Hair strands bind with soap scum and other debris, creating dense clumps that cling to pipe walls and trap more material over time.

           Prevention Tips:

Install hair catchers or drain strainers in showers and bathtubs

          Clean strainers weekly

Run hot water down the drain after showers to flush loosened hair

          2. Grease, Oil, and Fat (The Kitchen Nightmare)

           Why It Causes Blockages:

When you pour cooking oil or grease down the sink, it may be liquid now, but it solidifies as it cools inside your pipes. Over time, this creates a thick, waxy buildup that traps food particles and causes stubborn blockages.

           Prevention Tips:

Never pour grease or oil down the drain—instead, pour into a container and dispose in the bin

Wipe greasy pans with paper towel before washing

Run hot water for 30 seconds after using the sink to help keep oils moving

          3. Food Scraps

           Why It Causes Blockages:

Even with a garbage disposal, food scraps can accumulate and combine with grease to form stubborn clogs. Rice, pasta, coffee grounds, and eggshells are particularly problematic.

           Prevention Tips:

Scrape plates into the bin before rinsing

Use a sink strainer to catch food particles

Avoid putting fibrous foods (celery, corn husks) down the disposal

          4. Tree Roots

           Why It Causes Blockages:

Tree roots naturally seek out moisture and nutrients. Old or cracked pipes provide the perfect entry point. Roots can infiltrate through tiny gaps and grow inside the pipe, eventually causing complete blockages or even pipe collapse.

           Prevention Tips:

Have your pipes inspected if you have large trees near underground plumbing

Consider root barriers when planting new trees

Schedule regular drain camera inspections if you've had root issues before

          5. Soap Scum

           Why It Causes Blockages:

Traditional soap bars contain fats and oils that combine with minerals in your water to create a hard, white residue called soap scum. Over time, this buildup narrows your pipes.

           Prevention Tips:

Switch to liquid soap or synthetic detergent

Clean drains monthly with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar

          Flush with hot water regularly

          6. Foreign Objects

           Why It Causes Blockages:

Children's toys, sanitary products, baby wipes, cotton buds, and even "flushable" wipes can cause immediate blockages. Many of these items don't break down in water and get caught in pipe joints or bends.

           Prevention Tips:

Keep a bin in the bathroom for non-flushable items

Educate children about what can and can't go down the drain

Remember: Only toilet paper should be flushed—even "flushable" wipes cause problems

           Why It Causes Blockages:

Over time, clay, cast iron, or PVC pipes can crack, collapse, or develop rough interiors that catch debris. Older homes in Golden Grove often have ageing pipework that's more susceptible to blockages.

           Prevention Tips:

If your home is older, consider a CCTV drain inspection

Watch for signs like slow drainage, wet patches in the yard, or recurring blockages

Proactive pipe relining or replacement can save money in the long run

When to Call a Professional Plumber

While some minor blockages can be cleared with a plunger, it's time to call a licensed plumber if:

Multiple drains are blocked (indicates a main sewer line issue)

You hear gurgling noises from other fixtures when running water

Water backs up or sewage odours appear

Plunging doesn't work or the blockage returns quickly
